I like to think I have several “author” voices that come out to play at different times -- often when they are perceived to be needed. But, naturally when you have several precious babies, I have a favourite. The voice is sarcastic, spiteful and visceral. It’s meant to be funny but seems to hold a surprising amount of truth and transparency.
And it is a voice I stole, in part, from my childhood best friend.
She was a poet mostly but it was truly her prose that inspired me. Specifically a Harry Potter fanfiction that had spiralled wildly into its own story. It was lively, insane and, at times, utterly nonsensical -- but it was so much fun. And it is something that has stayed with me even almost a decade later.
She wrote like it didn’t matter -- like nothing mattered. And there was so much freedom in that mentality that I wanted a piece of it too. And, when no one is looking, that is exactly how I write. And it’s so much fun.
I had an epiphany last week: if writing in this way is not only fun to do but fun to read, then why am I not writing like that all the time? Simple reason: I don’t perceive it as “proper writing.” (That and sometimes the energy is hard to keep up.) But this week I have put it to the test, does the voice hold up in this story?
Do let me know.
This week has been the beginning of the Death of God for me. I have embraced the devil and chaos for the chance to write something that is fun and memorable and me. Your thoughts on whether it works out or not are greatly appreciated. :)
